Osram Powerball HCI-TS (ceramic metal halide CDM) Warm up

Osram Powerball HCI-TS (ceramic metal halide CDM) Warm up Tube. Duration : 1.37 Mins.

Close up examination of a ceramic metal halide lamp warming up. The lamp is an Osram HCI-TS 70W/830 Warm white,on a Philips HID-PV 070/I ballast. It uses 2nd generation ceramic metal halide technology, the powerball, which offers faster warm-up, higher energy efficiency and longer lamp life. First generation ceramic MH lamps used a cylindrical arc tube, made of alumina. However, the large surface area of the arc tube, and the uneven heating of the arc tube led to large heat losses, thermal stress and corrosion (where liquid halides could pool in the cool corners of the arc tube). A spherical arc tube avoids all these problems. In this example, an electronic ballast has been used. Electronic ballasts tend to lead to faster warm-up as they can deliver a higher power to the lamp when it is cold. Traditional electromagnetic ballasts deliver only a very low power when the lamp is cold, leading to protracted warm up times. Also shown are the mains current and power waveforms, showing the high power factor and modest harmonic content of a modern electronic ballast. In this example, the full operating power of the system is about 81W, using a Philips CDM ballast. This ballast drives lamps at approximately 73W, with ballast losses of approximately 8W. By contrast electromagnetic ballast losses are typically around 2x that. The electronic ballast also provides flicker-free lighting. This is quite handy for video, as it avoids aliasing and beating between the camera shutter and the ...
